This is the 3rd part of my new project if you missed the first
two parts then account yourself unlucky. I have gradually moved
on from more gratuious violence to gratuious sex.
I like Sex and Violence. We are entertained by it in film and on television and read about
it in newspapers. I find it as attractive as anybody else and
after dwelling on the nature of it for sometime, I decided to
include it in my new project. It will include sex and violence
as well as pictures that the publishers would not allow in my
present book as well as the things I usually do. I am calling
it Gratuitous Sex and Violence - My Favourites because it's all about sensation not exposition and because they
are gratuitous, I do not have to explain the pictures or be drawn
into discussing the implications of them. In fact, all my pictures
I have ever taken are gratuitous. They have no reason to exist
other than for the sake of my ego. I am thinking along the lines
of male violence, female violence, murder, gang violence, casual
violence, violence within relationships, rape and revenge. The
scenes will be flimic and suggest narrative and I have been priming
myself by seeking out violent films. The project has been long
in the gestation and the pictures displayed here are the second
installment of my project.
If you are shocked by any of these images it is probably because
you are not used to seeing much violence in staged photography.
It has been in films, television and literature for decades. The
crime novel makes up a large section in any bookshop or library.
Death has been shown in various adventurous fashion magazines
over the years but it has always been imperative that the model
and clothes still look beautiful in death, which always undercuts
the power of the picture. After all, it is clothes they are selling;
they do not want to alienate their audience or advertisers. In
these pictures shown here I am only at the service of my art and
do not have to care who I alienate. In fact, it's my desire to
alienate my audience section by section. But violence is not the
only thing on my mind; I have other aesthetic fish to fry.
I have hardly taken any personal pictures for the last 2 years
because I have not felt motivated enough to do so. I made an abortive
attempt in the spring of last year but since last autumn I have
been regularly photographing and the pictures you see here is
a work in progress. One of the things I want is more sense narrative
in my pictures. I am working along several strands of thought
and taking pictures in series. By series, I am not just talking
about themes but also doing several shots of a moment. I am trying
to explore something other than the single definitive, strong
photograph, where the composition and action is just so and as
a result I am distributing that strength over several frames.
As a consequence each frame in the series of an event is weaker
but taken as a whole I hope the resultant work becomes as strong
or stronger than the single picture. I have chosen to show them
as animated gifs as it seemed the most convenient way to display
them on the web. They become like excerpts from movies.
The question I am always asking myself is how do I take an interesting
picture? T he answer is I am not sure, but if I load my mind with
enough visual information and concentrate on some unconsidered
trifle long enough maybe I can associate two apparently disparate
thoughts and conjure one up. There is no beauty in my life. The
closest I get to it is an ugly beauty - images that contain enough
grit to irritate your mind and bring you back to them again. |
